What’s the difference between assistive technology and off the shelf technology? Assistive Technology (AT) is any item, software, or system that helps a person with a disability. For a long time, AT focused on specialized tools and devices. Now it includes devices made for anyone. The devices made for anyone are off the shelf technology. These include touch screen devices and home systems. How can I avoid delay of approval of my request? One of the best ways to avoid a delay in your request is to put as much detail in your request form as you can. Some problems to avoid with the request form are: Not enough detail about the items you are asking for, like missing device model or cost. Not listing the ISP goal(s) the technology will help you meet. Not giving detail about how you will use the technology to support your life. Not enough detail about why you need more than the base model of a device. A base model is the least expensive model. For example, you might need a larger screen because of your vision needs. You ask for a device with cellular, but you don’t explain why you need it. The Technology Fund can buy a device that has cellular. But the fund can't pay for monthly fees. You asked for gaming equipment. The Technology Fund will not pay for gaming and entertainment equipment. The only time the fund may pay for this is if the technology goes with an ISP goal. The ISP goal must not keep you away from the community or people. Your request is approved, but there may be other ways to get the technology. For example, you may be able to get the technology from other places like Medicaid. Or you may want technology for work, which you can get from employment funds.
