About Us

The Rhode Island State Psychiatric Hospital (RISPH) is Rhode Island's only state-operated forensic psychiatric hospital dedicated to providing specialized inpatient behavioral healthcare for individuals with serious mental illness requiring forensic psychiatric treatment.

Established as a freestanding hospital in 2022, RISPH serves a unique and complex patient population while advancing recovery, rehabilitation, public safety, and successful community reintegration. Our secure therapeutic environment balances compassionate, recovery-oriented care with the responsibility of promoting safety for our patients, staff, and communities.

Who We Are

RISPH provides comprehensive psychiatric assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, competency restoration, and recovery services through an integrated multidisciplinary team of behavioral health and allied healthcare professionals.

Every patient receives an individualized treatment plan tailored to their clinical, psychiatric, rehabilitative, and recovery needs. We recognize that recovery is a journey, and we are committed to helping every individual achieve the highest possible level of independence while reducing the likelihood of future involvement with the criminal justice system. 

Our Role in Rhode Island

RISPH plays a critical role within Rhode Island's behavioral healthcare continuum. Working collaboratively with BHDDH, the Rhode Island Department of Health, the Judiciary, the Department of Corrections, community behavioral health providers, and numerous healthcare partners, we ensure coordinated, evidence-based care across the continuum—from admission through successful community reintegration.

Our work extends far beyond hospitalization. Recovery requires collaboration before, during, and after treatment, and we remain committed to supporting patients throughout that journey.
