ESH Revitalization Project on the Zambarano Campus

There is a great deal of work being done as we plan for the future of Eleanor Slater Hospital (ESH). In October of 2022, we established and opened the RI State Psychiatric Hospital. With our forensic psychiatric patients in a separate facility, we were well positioned to begin the planning of revitalizing our medical hospitals.

Throughout this time, rest assured that our most important goal remains the safety, wellbeing, and the care of all our patients. At ESH, we appreciate, recognize, and respect that many of our long-term patients consider ESH their home. Our focus will remain patient driven as we improve the hospital, our facilities, as well as our services. Most importantly, we will ensure our patients receive the best care in the most appropriate setting for their individual needs.

As we reestablish our roots as a traditional Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH), we need to  build sufficient capacity to fully serve Rhode Island’s medically complex population in a high-quality facility.

The feasibility study that is being conducted will assess the current and future need for LTACH capacity in the State using historic patient data and interviews with numerous community partners and stakeholders. We will keep our patients and community informed every step of the way. Our next Family/ Community Forum will take place once the feasibility study is completed, and we will always keep you updated on this site.
